The inaugural ceremony also witnessed the presence of Asian Education Group’s leadership and Asian Law College’s academic team, which included, Dr. Sandeep Marwah, President, Asian Education Group (AEG); Dr. Lalitya Vir Srivastava, Director-Asian Education Group (AEG); Mr. Saurabh Sharma, Director-Asian Education Group (AEG); Mr. Gurdeep Singh Raina Director-Asian Education Group (AEG); and Mr. Ashish Bhardawaj, HOD-Asian Law College (ALC) who hosted the event on behalf of the Institute.

In his inaugural address, Dr. Lalitya Vir Srivastava, Director, Asian Education Group (AEG) expressed his gratitude towards the eminent guests and the academic team and welcomed all the students to Asian Law College. In his address, Dr. Lalitya Vir Srivastava dwelt upon the cardinal importance of ‘DISCIPLINE’ in our lives and told the students, “Dedicate your attention to Discipline. In anything and everything that you do, add value through the inculcation of discipline. The legal profession ideally is all about discipline; you have the responsibility to make the society better. So, own this responsibility and make discipline a way of life for yourself. It will help you add value everywhere … health, studies, work … just about everywhere.” Moreover, he also advised the students to consciously develop both personal and professional skills and never let go their quest for knowledge that would help them become a successful lawyer and legal practitioner in the long run.

In his welcome address, Mr. Saurabh Sharma, Director-Asian Education Group (AEG) heartily welcomed all the new batch of B.A.LL.B. & LL.B. students and congratulated them for taking the first step towards the legal profession which he said was “one of the most prestigious and sought-after career option in the modern times.” He substantiated his views by quoting the huge increase in the aspirants who have applied for this year’s CLAT exam. The reason for this, according to Mr. Saurabh Sharma was that “law offers huge career options across different sectors and industries.” He further stated that as a matter of fact, law is the only field of study that opens career opportunities in all the three organs of governance, namely Legal, Executive and Judiciary. Hence, he advised the students to make the “maximum use of this opportunity” and to “treat it like an investment in yourself”.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Sandeep Marwah, President, Asian Education Group (AEG) welcomed all the new students on board of Asian Law College and enlivened the ambiance with his inspiring speech laced with some stirring Hindi couplets. He strongly motivated the students by stating that “two things were much more beautiful than what you can see with your naked eyes – your THINKING and your FEELINGS … and the best part is that both the things are there right within you!” Invoking the Almighty on behalf of all the new batch students, he prayed, “Hey Lord, give me good thinking and feelings and make me a good human being so that I can make an extraordinary difference within my nation and the world!”  He also cautioned the students to stay away from inherently negative people who either do not want to do anything or tender excuses for not doing something and always seek the company of positive people who are self-motivated, hardworking and wish to achieve something worthwhile in their lives. He advised the students to develop a strong determination to achieve their goals and ambitions.

This was followed by the eminent guest address by Hon’ble Justice Kurian Joseph, Former Judge-Supreme Court of India & Former Chief Justice-Himachal Pradesh High Court. Delivering his address from virtual platform, Hon’ble Justice Kurian Joseph at first extended his thanksgiving and greetings to all the Directors of AEG and the distinguished guest, Ms. Flavia Agnes. He then congratulated the students for choosing to study law for a career and told them that today was an important day in their life. Picking up the thread of ‘DISCIPLINE’ discussed by Dr. Lalitya Vir Srivastava, Director, Asian Education Group (AEG), Hon’ble Justice Kurian Joseph expounded further on the topic and said, “Discipline is indeed a key aspect of life, but it has been found missing almost everywhere including in bar councils and legal profession.” Lamenting on the state of affairs, he said, “We have forgotten the constitutional way of living and the constitutional discipline. Remember, you are going to be LAW MEN and not LAY MEN, so you need to have a constitutional conscience because society expects so many things from you. So, you must refrain from unlawful conduct. It is here that discipline will decide your destiny.” Here, Hon’ble Justice Kurian Joseph advised the students to “always strive for excellence, be prepared for a thrilling career, and become achievers in society.” He also warned them to be wary of the three evil ‘Cs’ of Indian society – viz., Casteism, Communalism and Corruption and conduct themselves as “true sons and daughters of Mother India”.

Mr. Gurdeep Singh Raina Director-Asian Education Group (AEG) then addressed the august gathering and shared a very important thought with the new batch of B.A.LL.B. & LL.B. students. He said, “Among other things, what is greatly important is to lead a balanced life. This includes sparing your thoughts and efforts towards your health, peace of mind and family.” Here, he cited the example of the “Lemon & Spoon Race” that most of us have played during our school days. He said that if we consider lemon as our personal life and spoon as our professional life, then we must be careful not to allow the lemon to drop out of the spoon, as success would become quite meaningless without good health and a happy family life.

This was followed by a highly thought-provoking eminent guest address by the renowned Indian women’s right lawyer & Co-founder-MAJLIS Legal & Cultural Resource Centre, Ms. Flavia Agnes. Profusely thanking the AEG Family for the privilege of inviting her for this Orientation Programme, Ms. Flavia Agnes humbly stated that she was “happy to know that she can be an inspiration for people even while being an independent person and not an acclaimed lawyer.” She then recounted her extraordinary and courageous journey as an Indian women’s right lawyer and becoming a strong votary of women movement in India on issues of domestic violence, feminist jurisprudence, and minority rights. She quoted at length the rape cases in India starting from the infamous Mathura Rape Case in 1972 that rocked the nation and led to the beginning of some revolutionary changes in law and women’s perception in Indian society.

This solemn morning session of the “Inaugural Ceremony” held on Monday, 26th October 2020 concluded with the customary ‘Vote of Thanks’ delivered by Mr. Ashish Bhardawaj, HOD-Asian Law College (ALC).

The post-lunch session saw the most awaited attraction of the event – the well-known Indian politician, animal rights activist and environmentalist, Mrs. Maneka Gandhi – take centrestage of the function and deliver an absolutely eye-opening live interactive webinar on “People, Environment & Animals”! This motivational session was truly enlightening in the sense that Mrs. Maneka Gandhi offered an in-depth account of the “why do we need to look after the animals” and the way animal formed the basis of our entire existence. To quote her words, “They work for us and we are here because of them!” The entire session was studded with several references and examples in support of her exposition that explained in ample measures the “reasons why we need to have strict animal laws in place”.

With this, this one-of-its-kind virtual ‘Orientation Day’ ceremony for Asian Law College’s new batch of B.A.LL.B. & LL.B. students came to a solemn end.
