The Gandhian Centre for Peace and Nonviolent Communication, in collaboration with Moot Court Committee of Asian Law College organized a Mock Mediation Workshop for all the batches of LL.B. and B.A.LL.B. on 3rd October 2024. The objective of the workshop was to provide the students with practical knowledge and hands-on experience in mediation, a key alternative dispute resolution (ADR) method. It was aimed at equipping attendees with essential mediation skills and offering insights into the process of conflict resolution outside traditional litigation.
The workshop was facilitated by remarkable students of Asian Law College under the guidance of esteemed faculty coordinators of the Gandhian Centre for Peace and Nonviolent Communication, and the moot Court Committee of Asian Law College, including GNLU Mediation Competition team members Kavish Chugh (B.A.LL. B 2020), Devansh Chaudhary (B.A.LL. B 2022) and Pranjal Gupta (B.A.LL. B 2020). Other notable facilitators included Tamanna Vaid (B.A.LL. B 2022), Anugrah Saxena (B.A.LL. B 2022), and Aadya Kishor (B.A.LL. B 2022).
The event commenced with the facilitators introducing the organizing committees, followed by a brief overview of the Concept of Mediation. They emphasized the significance of mediation as an alternative dispute resolution (ADR) method, highlighting its advantages over traditional litigation. The facilitators delved into the core concepts of mediation, including the basic procedure, which typically involves a neutral third party (the mediator) facilitating communication between the disputing parties to help them reach a mutually agreeable solution. They also explained the distinction between general information (GI) and specific information (SI) in mediation. The success rates of mediation were discussed, with statistics indicating that a high percentage of mediated cases result in settlements. The relevant legal provisions regarding mediation were outlined, including the applicable laws and regulations in the jurisdiction and the roles and responsibilities of mediators were also explained in detail.
The session concluded with facilitators sharing their experiences as a mediator, following a doubt-clearing segment The mediation workshop conducted by the students proved to be a valuable learning experience for all students. The interactive format, coupled with the opportunity to ask questions during the doubt session, created a conducive environment for understanding the principles and techniques of mediation.
