Most distinguished legal luminary – MR. AMARJIT SINGH CHANDHIOK – offers an enriching live webinar session on “CLASSROOM TO COURT ROOM” at Asian Law College!

Asian Law College (ALC) organized a most enriching Live Interactive session on the topic “CLASSROOM TO COURT ROOM” with none other than the most distinguished legal luminary, MR. AMARJIT SINGH CHANDHIOK – Chairman-National Committee for Regional Affairs, INSOL India; Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India; Formal Principal Council, European Union Commission; and Former Additional Solicitor General of India, Delhi High Court – for all BA-LLB/LLB students & aspirants on Saturday, 5th September 2020 at 4:00 pm under its Guest Lecture Series.

Mr. Amarjit Singh Chandhiok is a distinguished Indian Senior Advocate practising in the Supreme Court and High Courts in India.  He was president of Delhi High Court Bar Association for six terms, which is a record.  A former Additional Solicitor General of India, Mr. Chandhiok was also Principal Counsel to the European Union Commission from August 2013 to March 2016.  He was the only Indian lawyer who held that position so far.

Mr. Chandhiok is also President of Maadhyam, Council for Conflict Resolution, a professional organization aiming excellence in the development of law and conflict resolution.  He is Vice-Chairman of Society of Insolvency Practitioners of India and Member, Advisory Committee of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India. He has also been the Chairman of the Working Group under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India.

Mr. Amarjit Singh Chandhiok has been conferred many prestigious awards including “Outstanding Jurist – 2000” by J.N. Kaushal Jurisprudence Centre, New Delhi; Award for rendering meritorious legal services from Delhi Citizens’ Forum for Civil Rights in 2002; the National Law Day Award-2006 from the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, for the contribution made in the practice of Civil Law; The “Leader in the Profession – Leader of the Bar Award-2007” from the Bar Council of Delhi, in March 2007 (first time the Bar Council, a statutory body under the Advocates Act, has conferred this award) and “Sikh of the Year 2010” by Sikh Forum International, London, UK.

He has also been awarded two doctorates (honoris causa).

The webinar was followed by a lively Q&A Session with the  distinguished guest.

The webinar session started with the illustrious guest, Mr. Amarjit Singh Chandhiok, thanking the ALC team for inviting him for this session and wishing good health to all participants during these trying times of COVID-19 pandemic. He then reminded the students about the special significance of the day which happened to be the “Happy Teacher’s Day”! Gratefully acknowledging the big role of teachers in a student’s life, Mr. Chandhiok said, “My teachers laid the foundation of my legal career and I am what I am all because of them.”

The distinguished guest then went on to the topic of the day’s webinar, viz. “CLASSROOM TO COURT ROOM” and nostalgically remembered his own student days at his alma mater, Faculty of Law-University of Delhi. Here, he mentioned how he had never thought about a career in Law and said that “Destiny brought me here.”

Talking about the great importance of CLASSROOM for students of law, the most distinguished legal luminary, Mr. Amarjit Singh Chandhiok had some golden words of advice for all law students and aspirants. He said, “Classroom is your foundation where your teachers are laying down the path of your future. So attend all your classes by all means and partake all the lessons being taught there.” He further stated, “Parents and teachers are the two entities laid by God who will never have conflict with you. The more you respect them, the more you will develop as a professional and also as a good human being.”

The erudite and highly experienced guest speaker then spoke about the positively changing professional scenario for law graduates in the modern times. Here, Mr. Amarjit Singh Chandhiok especially talked about the emerging field of “Mediator & Arbitrator”, which he said was coming up strongly as a great career option for law graduates. He, however, advised the students not to dilute the supreme importance of COURT ROOM and said, “All said and done, when you leave your classroom, you must join a COURT, preferably, a DISTRICT COURT, for a couple of years at the least, because it is here that you will actually learn the intricacies of a lawyer’s role and function.”

The distinguished legal dignitary also spoke at length about the lawyer’s role in bringing harmony to the society through their conscientious discharge of duties in whatever capacities that they were able to build up their careers. Here, his words of wisdom for the students were, “First, emerge as a great gentleman and a great human being, and then march on bright on your chosen career paths!”

The WEBINAR was then followed by a lively Q&A Session with the distinguished guest. Here, there was a string of questions related to the various aspects of the study of law and the various career options that were currently available for students that were put forward by the enthusiastic students. The knowledgeable speaker answered each of these questions most authoritatively and convincingly to the complete satisfaction of the students and all participants.

Once done, Mr. Amarjit Singh Chandhiok was presented with a glittering “Memento” on behalf of Asian Education Group.
