Career options for a LL.B. graduate are plenty!

Candidates intending to become legal professionals or wanting to enter in law field can choose LL.B. (Bachelor of Laws) course. Abbreviated as LL.B., Bachelor of Laws is the degree in law that is conferred upon graduating from a college of law. This degree is awarded after the student successfully completes 3-years of academic studies in law subjects. An aspirant can start their career in law after completion of a graduate degree or as an integrated law degree which can be enrolled for after completing senior secondary education. Thus, it is only after successfully completion of law course and after regsitration of one self with Bar Council of India one is entitled to be known as “Lawyer”.

In today’s world , legal education is offered at different levels. Till recently, legal education here had been generally offered only as a three years graduate degree (LL.B.). However, since 1987, the academic system in law has been changed. The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) was the first Indian Law University set up in Bangalore and it offered a five years integrated law course in B.A.LL.B. (Hons.). Thus in India the gateway to legal education is either through LL.B. or through BA.LLB. courses.

As regards the LL.B. course, it is a traditional course offered by various Indian law institutions and it is of 3 years duration. On completion of the course, a LL.B.. degree is awarded to the law students. After obtaining a LLB. degree, it is compulsory for law graduates to appear for All Indian bar Examination (AIBE) examination which enables them to procure certificate of practice a mandate for practising in Indian Courts.

The need of quality Legal education and demand for legal professionals is gaining momentum today as more number of advocates are required to handle the cases arising out of disputes between private individuals, nations and crimes against society. And, in a society, lawyers render services to all segments of society by helping the aggreived section of society in enforcing their legal and constitutional rights. Moreover, “LAW” has a singular selling proposition that a law graduate can choose a career in all the three organs of the government i.e. Judiciary, Executive and Legislation. Private Law Practice: As an advocate, the law graduate’s job is to bring justice to the people and society. Though the job is not very lucrative in the initial period but with the passage of time the growth is exponential in terms of knowledge and money. There are various field of specializations in which you can practice law:

· Criminal Law – As a criminal lawyer, the Advocate’s job is to defend the person guilty of a social crime. The practice in criminal courts has to be above emotions and social sentiments becasuse as a criminal lawyer it is their professional duty to deefend their clients even if the darkest of the crime has been performed by the accused.

· Civil Law – Civil law can be further divided into cases related to Property and Personal Injury. For a law graduate, the major role as civil lawyer is to ensure that your client gets sufficient damages for the injury caused to him by the opposite party.

· Corporate Law – As a corporate lawyer, the law graduate is obligated to provide legal assistance to corporate firms regarding formation, compliance and governance. In the corporate world, good negotiation and communication skills are therefore much required.

· Income Tax Law – As an income tax lawyer, the law graduate mainly deals with the matters related to filing of Income Tax and matters related to discrepancies in refunds and filing of Income Tax. Here, they advise High Worth Individuals and Organization in respect to any tax issues.

Corporate Legal Advisor: As a corporate legal advisor, the law graduate is required to give support and assistance to organizations in their day to day work. As a corporate legal advisor, they are required to appear in the court representing their organization and even for out-of-the-court settlement. This is one of the most lucrative career prospects after completion of LL.B.

Judge: The most common and satisfactory career choice for many law graduates is the judiciary wherein, after completion of LLB, one can get appointed as a judge. As a judge, they can deliver judgements to bring a change in social system of a country. The job brings in authority and responsibility to deliver justice.

Teaching: With good academic record and zeal to learn, a law graduate can opt for LL.M. after completion of LLB. He can also apply in various universities and institutions offering legal education for being observed in the capacity of Assistant professor.
