Best Wishes to Justice Kurian Joseph for Second Inning of Life

The memories of Justice Kurian Joseph who superannuated from Supreme Court on Thursday (29.11.2018) will be long cherished in the corridor of Supreme Court, Kerala High Court and Himachal Pradesh High Court. The inception of professional Journey of Justice Kurian Joseph dates to the year in 1979 when he joined bar before Kerala High Court. In 1996 he was designated as Senior Advocate and in 2000 he was decorating the bench. After serving as judge at Kerala High Court and twice as chief Justice of Kerala High Court he was appointed as Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High court. He was elevated as Judge of Supreme court on 8th March 2013.

The members of bar have always extended appreciation to Justice Kurian Joseph for his deep knowledge of law, art of interpretation and progressive judgments. Justice Kurian Joseph will always be remembered as most successful mediator who resolved complex matrimonial disputes, property disputes within the legal framework and for the benefit of the litigants. He was a kind human and a passionate judge while resolving family disputes and a strict personality when it came to adjudging the criminal matters in the interest of justice.

The below mentioned instances during his tenure as Supreme Court judge speaks volume about his personality. First when he wrote a letter to then Chief Justice HL Dattu with an appeal to respect all religious festivals as CJ H.L Dattu has kept a conference on good friday. Secondly his participation in the open press conference on 12th January 2018 and lastly his letter to Ex- CJI Justice Dipak Mishra supporting for  elevation and appointment of Justice K.M Josephto Supreme Court.

The Current CJI Justice Ranjan Gogoi lamented the retirement of Justice Kurian Joseph by expressing “Good judges are going away. We need replacements and this is what I want to share with the bar. I am afraid. I am apprehensive. The younger lot in the bar are not willing to become judges”. In the final address to the lawyers and Judges of Supreme Court Justice Kurian Joseph   requested the judges and the lawyers to be compassionate towards litigants and to avoid unnecessary litigation which only kills Judicial time. He also cautioned on Public Interest Litigation (PIL) as being used as individual publicity litigation. He further stressed on the importance of Constitution due to which India being most diversified in terms of religion, culture and philosophies stands united. The success of Justice Kurian Joseph as Judge and mediator was reiterated by Attorney General K.K Venugopal when he described Justice KurianJoseph as one of the nicest and most pleasant judge the apex court has ever seen. The Supreme court Bar Association President Senior Advocate Vikas Singh highligted the efforts made by Justice Kurian Joseph while extending relief during kerala flood relief.
