ALCALUMNI OF THE MONTHDECEMBER’24

Q1. To begin with, if you could share with us your feelings, how do you feel on connecting with your alma mater?

Feeling nostalgic and grateful. I am deeply grateful for the experiences and opportunity that my Alma meter provided. The education, support from my teachers and friendship I made here have shaped me who I am today and on the same whenever I look back I remember my time at my Alma mater with great fondness. The memories will always stay with me.

Q2. At present, you are working as an associate trainee with Shardul Amarchand, tell us about experience over there. And what all you do in terms of your KRAs.

As a trainee in a top tier law firm I generally engaged in hard core legal research as well have to engage in administrative tasks also, sometimes. As well I indulge in case briefing to Senior Associate and partners at firm. I also help my seniors to file a case at different courts of country and appearing through VC in Delhi High Court in different matters when seniors are stuck in other matters. But the main work I realized so far in the period of two weeks for a top tier firm is hard core research and that’s my priority of work so far.

Q3. You specialize in dispute resolution. What skills do you believe are mandatory to excel in this field?

According to me, dispute resolution is a broad field that includes various technicalities such as negotiation, arbitration, mediation and litigation. To be a good professional in this field you have to be very thorough in Civil procedure and other substantive civil Laws of the nation. On the other you have to possess strong analytical skills and drafting skills. You have to be very specialized in the research domain because in this field you have to research and apply relevant case laws, statutes and regulations to disputes.

Q4. After passing out from the college, you did LLM in Criminal Law also. What drew your interest in crime.

So to be very honest my first love was always criminal law even after joining a top tier firm till now my first love is criminal law itself and I want to be a good criminal lawyer itself. As i had also shortlisted for many interviews for Delhi govt panel and Rajasthan govt panel for post defense counsel. And I love to tell my teachers that in December i had an interview for defense counsel post on criminal side for Saket court also. But if I tell about crime. My interest in criminal law was sparked during my graduation when Sandeep Khatri sir of my college taught IPC. While exploring various laws I found myself particularly drawn to the complexity and depth of criminal law. The fundamental role that criminal law plays in maintaining order and protecting citizens’ rights inspired me to explore it further. Additionally, LLM in criminal law allowed me to deepen my understanding especially in areas like constitution rights, criminal procedure and intersection of law with forensic science which further fueled my passion. I just want to request from my teachers that they shower their blessing upon me and I will be able to fulfill my dream to be a good criminal lawyer for the Delhi govt. panel.

Q5. There may be certain challenges for opting legal domain, as it is the case with other domains as well. But we would like to know from you what are the most rewarding aspects of the legal domain.

The most rewarding aspect of the legal domain which I think is that you are voiceless and fulfil the constitutional morality of social justice which are enshrined in our preamble of constitution. And second I think that you are a part of the legacy.

Q6. When you reflect on your time in the college, how do you see your learnings from the college guiding you in your professional career.

The learning from college played a pivotal role in shaping my professional career especially in the legal field. Like from here I developed a strong foundation of legal principles, developed my critical thinking, ethical and professional responsibility and much more. And it continues to guide me in every aspect of my career from legal analysis to client interaction.

Q 7. In what ways do you stay informed about changes in the law and industry trends, and how has the evolution of technology enhanced your ability to adapt and excel in your professional role over time?

The evolution of technologies has significantly enhanced my Ability to adapt and excel in the legal field providing me with powerful tools and resources to streamline my work and stay updated and improve my efficiency. I want to tell you how technology has played a vital role like now you have legal databases like Westlaw , scc online and manu patra to conduct your legal research. For recent developments in law you have live law and a bar and bench where you can access recent developments in law.

Q8. Your insights will reach your juniors. What skills and aspects would you recommend them to work upon, if they have to make a name in the legal world.

I just want to share that whatever I have learnt by my experience is that first you have to be very thorough in laws. You don’t have to learn the law, rather you need to have the capacity to understand the law. And second, make the habit of reading judgements and bare acts instead of textbooks if you will read judgments from the bare acts that will develop the interpretation skills which is the only that a good lawyer possesses. And last not least develop soft skills from college time itself then only you will be able to compete with others.
