Workshop on Legal Research

The Research and Development Cell of the Asian Law College has successfully organised One Day Workshop on Legal Research on 7 November 2022. The Workshop was conducted in two different sessions. The distinguished speaker for the first session was Dr. Shuchi Bharti, Research Specialist, Foundation for Creative Special Research, New Delhi and the Second Session was conducted by Mr. Abhinav Gupta, Advocate, Supreme Court of India.

Dr. Shuchi Bharti enlightened the students on the primary and secondary sources of legal research, how to access online databases, how to analyse a problem’s facts, the use of both inductive and deductive reasoning and the way to conclude research by applying legal reasoning. She also highlighted the role of interdisciplinary study and empirical research and stressed on the importance to understand the origin of a legal problem. The Second session was addressed by Mr. Abhinav Gupta, Advocate, Supreme Court of India. He informed the students that Legal Research should revolve around the questions of Who, why, What and How. He stressed on the importance of the intention behind a legislation and gave upmost importance to the bare acts and authorities on the specific subjects of law. He also exhibited a roadmap to the students on how to identify a research problem and the gaps which one might witness in the course of legal research.

Both the sessions were insightful and gave a great learning experience to the students. The students were able to comprehend the manner in which legal research needs to be conducted by acknowledging other respective fields that play an important role in the subject matter of legal research.
