Mr. RAJIV CHOUBEY, Chief Legal Officer, ACC Cement Ltd. delivered a live interactive webinar session on the topic “ENVIRONMENTAL LAW” at Asian Law College (ALC) for its B.A. LL.B. & LL.B. students and aspirants on Friday, 21st May 2021 from 3:00 PM onwards under its Legal Lecture Series (LLS) 2021 – Season 5. The webinar turned out to be a highly knowledgeful session for all who participated in it.
Mr. Rajiv Choubey is Chief Legal Officer and Company Secretary at ACC, with more than two decades of rich and diverse experience as an in-house Legal Counsel in the fields of Corporate Laws, Mergers & Acquisitions, Securities Laws, Corporate Governance, Commercial Laws, Joint Ventures, Environmental laws, Industrial & Labour Laws and Indirect Taxes. As Director-Legal, he has been the Head of Legal Services of the Company since July 2018, prior to which he worked with HCL Infosystems Limited (HCLI) as the General Counsel. Mr. Choubey began his career in 1997 and worked with various companies , viz., Delton Cables Ltd., UP Export Corporation Limited, Sterlite Industries, Maruti Suzuki & Vedanta Group across various businesses (MALCO, Copper, Aluminium & Power business) in various roles including Head Legal & Company Secretary of Sterlite Industries (India) Limited and later Vedanta Limited.
Mr. Choubey is a Law Graduate from University of Delhi and an Associate Member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India. He has also completed his LLM from Kurukshetra University and is a diploma holder in International Trade & Business Laws from the Indian Society of International Law, New Delhi as well as in Corporate Laws & Management from Indian Law Institute (ILI), New Delhi.
His contributions in the legal field have been recognized by various bodies/forums, such as the Indian National Bar Association (INBA), Indian Corporate Counsel Association (ICCA), Corporate Counsel Association of India (CCAI), IOD etc.

The webinar was followed by a lively Q&A Session with the eminent guest.
The webinar session started with the eminent guest, Mr. Rajiv Choubey, thanking the ALC team for inviting him for this session. To quote his words, he said that it was “always good to share his experiences with young students and prospective lawyers.”
He then right away got on to the topic of the day, i.e. “ENVIRONMENTAL LAW” and said that it was a very relevant topic in contemporary times. With the help of a PPT presentation, he then deliberated in great detail about the history and evolution of the concept of environment law in India. In particular, he quoted the provisions related to environmental protection that were enshrined even in the constitution of India. Here, he referred to Article 48-A, Article 51-A (g), Article 21 and the 42nd Amendment Act and said that “to think of the environment even at that time was quite commendable.” He then spoke at length about the various important Environmental Regulations like the Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act (1974), Air (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act (1981), Environment (Protection) Act (1986), E(P) Act Notification (1994), Hazardous Waste Act (1989), Public Utility Insurance Act (1991), Coastal Regulation Zone Act (1991), Bio Medical Waste (Management & Handling) Act (1998), etc. At this point, Mr. Choubey shared his insights on some of the major landmark judgments in the domain of environmental protection that had been effected in India so far.
The webinar was then followed by a lively Q&A Session with the eminent guest. Here, there were a number of questions related to the topic of environment as well as various aspects of his life, work and challenges that were put forward by the enthusiastic students. The highly experienced speaker answered each of these questions most authoritatively and convincingly to the complete satisfaction of the students and all participants.
