ALC Orientation Programme 2021: Day 3 – ‘CAMPUS TO CORPORATE’ – Legal Lecture Series (LLS) 2021 Talk by Mr.  RAJIV CHOUBEY, Chief Legal Officer, ACC Ltd.

Asian Law College inaugurated its new batch of 5-year B.A.LL.B. & 3-year LL.B. on Thursday, 7th October 2021. The orientation week inculcated  grand three-day Orientation Programme scheduled from Thursday, 7th October 2021 to Saturday, 9th October 2021. This programme was essentially organized to benefit the students who were about to begin a new phase in their academic life.

At the ALC Orientation 2021 Day 3 ceremony that was held on Saturday, 9th October 2021 at its campus located in Sector 125, Noida, Mr. RAJIV CHOUBEY – Chief Legal Officer, ACC Ltd. – was the Guest of Honour and he delivered a much relevant talk revolving around the theme of ‘CAMPUS TO CORPORATE’ under the Asian Law College’s unique Legal Lecture Series (LLS) 2021 initiative.

Mr. Rajiv Choubey is the Chief Legal Officer and Company Secretary of ACC Limited. He has more than two decades of experience in manufacturing as well as IT Company. Prior to joining ACC, he was the General Counsel of HCL Infosystems Ltd., Vice President – Legal & CS of Vedanta Limited and had brief stints at Maruti Suzuki, Hindustan Tin etc. Mr. Rajiv has handled not only governance and compliance in India but also in the US /NYSE during his stint at Sterlite/Vedanta. He has been recognized by various forums/bodies, including Indian Corporate Counsel Association (ICCA), Corporate Counsel Association of India (CCAI), Indian National Bar Association (INBA),Legal 500, IDEX, IOD as one of the leading in-house counsels/ teams which he has lead.

Delivering his Guest of Honour address on Day 3 of the ALC Orientation Programme 2021, Mr. Rajiv Choubey began his talk by first thanking the ALC Team for the invitation for this exciting event that marks the beginning of a new phase of life for the new batch of students.

Mr. Choubey then got on to the theme of the session – viz., ‘CAMPUS TO CORPORATE’ – and said, “Training is key to a successful transition from campus to the corporate world as it teaches the students the nuances of the code of conduct that can help them happily sail through conflict, competitions, sexual harassments, etc. that are some normal situations obtaining in the corporate world.” Talking about the differences of professional experiences between a practicing lawyer and a general / in-house counsel, Mr. Choubey said, “If a lawyer practices in a court of law, his knowledge and reach is restricted to one area of jurisprudence, but in becoming an in-house counsel, one has to have a comprehensive knowledge and must know all the aspects of jurisprudence to be successful in his/her career.” He further stated, “The role of general / in-house counsel is very challenging. Today, law is evolving in such a way that you have to keep constantly updated to stay relevant to the industry.”

Before he concluded his short, crisp talk, the senior and highly experienced legal professional shared a few wisdom-packed thoughts for the students to ponder and remember in their academic journey ahead.  Mr. Rajiv Choubey said:

1)      “Be passionate about your subject and the profession. Passion is really important. For any profession, practicing day-in and day-out is absolutely crucial. Start loving the profession; it will keep you motivated.”

2)      “Be aware of the ‘Pull & Push’ theory. You have to decide and do what you want to do. Remember, top lawyers work hard on each of their cases.”

3)      “Be ambitious. Keep your thoughts positive. Note in your diary all that you wish to achieve in your life and career.”

4)      “First practice as a lawyer, and then join the corporate if you wish to. Practice will help you in a big way.”

5)      “Have energy, ownership, and drive. Either do it or don’t do it. Always give your 100%!”
